"How many working days are left in 2026?" is the question behind every Q3 and Q4 plan. Once you're past July, the year feels half over — but the actual count of remaining business days, with weekends and federal holidays stripped out, is usually smaller than people guess. Let's compute the exact remaining working-day count from Wednesday, August 5, 2026. From August 5 through December 31 there are 148 calendar days. Those contain 20 full weeks plus 8 leftover days, which works out to 101 weekdays (Monday–Friday). Now subtract the five remaining federal holidays that fall on weekdays: Labor Day (Sep 7), Columbus Day (Oct 12), Veterans Day (Nov 11), Thanksgiving (Nov 26), and Christmas (Dec 25) — all weekdays in 2026. That gives 101 − 5 = 96 working days remaining from August 5, 2026, before any company-specific closures. If your office also closes Black Friday, subtract one more for 95. You can reproduce this count by listing weekdays from today to December 31 and crossing off each OPM federal holiday.
How the Remaining Days Distribute
The back half of the year isn't evenly spread. August is wide open (no federal holidays), which makes it a high-capacity month — about 23 working days. September loses Labor Day. October loses Columbus Day if you observe it. November gets hit hardest: Veterans Day plus Thanksgiving (and often Black Friday) strip out 2-3 working days. December is short, with Christmas and the year-end slowdown eating the back half of the month.
The practical implication: most real year-end capacity sits in August, September, and early October. By mid-November, effective working days drop sharply. If a deliverable has to land in December, plan to finish it by early November.
