That's not a random code β it's a Julian date, and it tells you exactly which day of the year the product was packaged. Once you know how to read it, you can decode freshness dates that manufacturers don't make obvious.
The system is simpler than it looks. Here's how it works.
The 3-Digit Day-of-Year Code
The core of a Julian date code is a 3-digit number representing the day of year:
- 001 = January 1
- 031 = January 31
- 059 = February 28 (or 060 in a leap year)
- 182 = July 1 (roughly mid-year)
- 365 = December 31
The numbering is just the ordinal day count from the start of the year. To convert a code back to a calendar date, you add up the month lengths until you reach that number.
The Year Prefix Variant
Many manufacturers add a leading digit (or two) to represent the year, giving a 4- or 5-digit code:
- 6245 could mean year 6 (2016 or 2026), day 245 (September 2)
- 26245 would mean year 2026, day 245
The convention varies by manufacturer, so context matters. A can stamped "6245" produced recently almost certainly means 2026, day 245 β September 2, 2026.
Why Manufacturers Use Julian Dates
Julian dates are compact, language-neutral, and easy for machines to stamp and sort. A 3-digit code fits in less space than "September 2," works in any country, and lets inventory systems compute shelf age with simple subtraction. That's why you see them on canned goods, snack packaging, beer, pharmaceuticals, and anything with a sell-by or best-by date that needs to track production lots.
