Most date math stops at days. But a growing slice of the working world needs finer granularity — the hours, minutes, and seconds between two timestamps. SLA timers, system uptime reports, log analysis, and elapsed-time tracking all live in the sub-day range, where "2 days" is too coarse to be useful.

The math is simple in principle: take the difference between two timestamps in milliseconds and convert down. But the practical edge cases — time zones, daylight saving jumps, leap seconds — are where it gets interesting.

The Conversion Ladder

Once you have the total duration in one unit, the rest is division:

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 1,440 minutes = 86,400 seconds
  • 1 hour = 60 minutes = 3,600 seconds
  • 1 minute = 60 seconds

So a 2-day, 6-hour, 30-minute span is 54.5 hours, or 3,270 minutes, or 196,200 seconds. Which unit you report depends on the audience — executives want days or hours, ops teams want minutes or seconds.

The Time Zone and DST Trap

Here's the catch: a "day" isn't always 24 hours when you cross a daylight saving transition. The Sunday in March when clocks spring forward is 23 hours long; the Sunday in November when they fall back is 25 hours. A meeting booked 7 days apart across a spring-forward date is 167 hours, not 168. For most business reporting this doesn't matter, but for SLA timers and uptime calculations it absolutely does — always work in UTC and convert to local only for display.

Where Sub-Day Granularity Matters

  • SLA timers: "Respond within 4 business hours" — you're counting minutes, not days.
  • Uptime reports: "99.9% uptime" means at most 8.76 hours of downtime per year. Sub-hour precision matters.
  • Log analysis: Time between events is measured in seconds or milliseconds.
  • Elapsed-time tracking: How long a process actually ran, including overnight spans.
